Set top box for TV audience research requiring a miniature mains
psu with 12W output
 |
The Customer had a requirement for a new product:
small, low cost, efficient and designed to plug into the motherboard
of the Customer's product. This unit needed to produce very
low RF emissions in order not to interfere when operating in
close proximity to television sets. |
| As the Customer's product uses Mains signalling,
this power supply unit operates at a frequency that avoids any
harmonics that could interfere with the mains signalling. For
this design the customer needed high product reliability (even
when installed in parts of the world with hostile mains) together
with compliance with world-wide safety approvals. |
 |
60W mains PSU to drive Deuterium UV light source
Designed to strike then run a deuterium UV light source
used for gas monitoring. The Customer required exceptionally stable
constant output current in a design which would be smaller and lighter
than their existing product. Designed to fit within the Customer's
enclosure, this unit provides 12 and 24Volt supply for instrumentation
and control.
This PSU also provides the required voltages during power up, and
then operation, in a specific sequential pattern, to maximise lamp
life and stability. In addition to meeting the input specification,
the design provided the additional benefits of Power Factor Correction
giving compliance to European Standards and greater efficiency.
19" Rack Mounted system for high reliability application
- Designed to meet all the advantages of customer's previous
solution with the benefits of modern technology.
A high reliability power supply for use in the petrochemical industry
designed to replace a battery and battery charger arrangement so
as to incorporate useful features of the battery without the need
to maintain the batteries themselves. Features also include redundancy
within the power supply, the ability to switch from mains to back-up
power in the event of mains failure and a high surge capability.
The equipment is configurable between 5 and 35 amps at 24Volts and
includes a failure monitoring relay line. The rack system provides
the opportunity to add extra units to increase the current capability
at a later date.
400 watt reversible output, current-controlled PSU to power Peltier
heating/cooling Elements.
 |
The Customer required a replacement power supply
after the regulation control chip used in the existing supply
became obsolete. The old power supply was designed before the
power factor correction specification BS EN 61000 3-2 was introduced,
and so the new design was a good opportunity to address compliance.
The new unit, a 400W constant current power supply for a DNA
testing instrument, had also to be mechanically identical to
the old PSU so that it would work within the existing instrument,
including the position and type of connectors. |
| Additionally, the new power supply provides a
controllable and reversible constant current output of up to
40V DC at 400W to drive a bank of Peltier heater/cooler elements.
The time/temperature profile to which the DNA is subjected is
controlled by a microprocessor in the customer's instrument.
This required the interface circuitry to be designed to convert
the digital signals into analogue commands that the power supply
could understand. To meet the demands of the world market, the
supply is designed to accept a mains input range of between
85 to 264V 50/60Hz. |
 |
 |
The increased efficiency has obviated the need for the old
heavy cast-aluminium heatsink, which has been replaced with
a purely decorative plastic moulding at one tenth of the cost.
The final solution is therefore both more efficient and considerably
lighter than the old unit, which in turn gives additional
customer benefit by reduced shipping weight and handling costs.

3 Phase mains input 1500W current-controlled module for electroplating
application
 |
Can be used in parallel for higher current requirements.
High-powered plating rectifiers with unique current control.
This 3 Phase mains input 1500W current-controlled module was
designed to be paralleled up for higher current applications.
The output is up to 300Amps into a maximum of 5V. The design
requirement included the need to be compatible with the Customer's
control circuitry and the ability to accept reverse currents
under certain conditions.
|
Replacement of a Solenoid with high current FET switch
| In response to a Customer's request for a series
of configurable low voltage high current DC motor controllers
rated at up to 4.8kW. The units have been designed to replace
a system which used solenoid operated contactors, which were
weighty and did not allow such features as soft-start, variable
speed control, overload and low supply voltage protection. |
 |
These versatile controllers have been designed using FET switching
techniques to provide cost-effective and compact electronic control
of both series and shunt wound motors at efficiency levels better
than 97%. The new design is managed by a micro controller which
allows the parameters, for different products, to be set by software.
Operating at 12 and 24 volts and up to 400 amps these units continually
monitor current consumption both to detect faults and motor overload.
The final solution has provided the customer with a more efficient,
reliable, compact and cost-effective solution. On time and within
budget.
Replacement of Battery Pack system for inflated mattress beds used
in treating serious burns patients
 |
Davtrend Limited were approached by a customer
to replace the existing battery pack system used to inflate
the mattresses on specially designed beds used for treating
victims of serious burns. The old design only powered the fans
required to inflate the mattress. The constraints included space
restrictions and a requirement for very low technical risk. |
The new design was successfully completed to time and within budget,
and provided power to all the functions of the bed including electric
motors, fans and microprocessor circuitry allowing short-term battery
capability.
The solution was successfully implemented throughout the customer's
European stock. Further contracts have followed for a higher power
variant and conversion suitable for the North American market.
24V/40W Power Supply Unit capable of delivering 80W for bursts of
1 second
| A small, cost-effective 24V power supply designed
to provide 40 watts, but with the capability to deliver 80 watts
for a second. Universal mains capability makes it suitable for
worldwide use. Because of the application, the power supply
needed to function over an unusually wide temperature range.
|
 |
Complex, high energy Power Supply Modules
 |
With it's world-wide application, this PSU was
designed with worldwide safety approvals in mind. A range of
modules designed to interface with the Customer's micro controller:
these modules provide high energy pulse with regulated AC supply
from world-wide mains inputs. |
| The new design operates off 100 - 230 Volts AC
input, while the previous design required a transformer to switch
between low and high mains voltages. Despite this additional
capability, the new design occupies the same dimensions as it's
predecessor, and is more powerful. |
